Her paintings are akin to collage, blending together layers of sheer fabric with softly rendered hand painted patterns which are then elongated by canvas stretcher bars, creating a frame for her elegantly beautiful compositions. His compelling world spans installation, performance, painting, and graffiti, illustrating the boldly blurred boundaries of contemporary creatives. Saraiva’s signature character ‘Mr. A’ is an image that explodes eerily, irreverently; his visual language borrowing kinesthesis from the environment of its original site-specific installations: the streets of Paris. Traditionally, graffiti vernacular and street art aesthetics have been met with friction in the art world’s white cube spaces, silent fears that the form dilutes the refinement that galleries ought to preserve. Her paintings transport the viewer through dimensional echoes; there is the surface image and there is the magic embedded within. Working primarily in oil on canvas, her work glows with an uncanny luminescence, emphasizing the surreal nature of her scenes. Rupturing reality like the vertigo of the past overlaid on pastel present, Papademetropoulos paints with seamless softness, creating a perspectival filter that is as beautiful as it is eviscerating. Artwork is custom framed when it is order, and may take up to 3 weeks to ship.

International customers are responsible for applicable duties and taxes.

DIMENSIONS 84 x 71 in. | 213.36 x 180.34 cm

MEDIUM Hand-tufted 100% wool rug

Edition of 30 + 2APs + 2PPs, 2022

Signed and numbered by the artist on a label affixed to the back of the rug.

PLEASE NOTE:

This work is made to order and may take up to 9 weeks to ship.

Purchaser agrees that you will not sell or transfer this work for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase.

ABOUT THE WORK

Multi-disciplinary artist Chloe Wise has a human-centered approach to her prolific oeuvre of paintings, sculptures, installations, and video work. Step one in this edition, each paper was hand painted first, using free-flowing strokes of highly liquid acrylic paint. The fluidity of the paint results in unpredictable spontaneous bleeds and blurs as the paint stains the paper. Next, an 11-color silkscreen process was applied to the painted papers, creating hard-edged graphic forms to contrast the atmospheric stains. Finally, the prints were hand finished by Johnson in his studio, giving some unique painterly touches, such as knuckles and hair texture. Each print in this edition is singular in the fluidity of the stained paper and the hand-embellished details.

“In my painting process I’m fascinated by the natural flow of paint, and the loose atmospheric blurs and bleeds that can result. I seek a dynamic contrast by applying hard edged stripes and minimal forms on top of the spontaneous washes. They start as color field abstractions, which then spark the potential for some figurative or narrative action to occur. My idea for this print was to capture those steps in a sequence that starts with the hand painted flow, followed by the sharp and precise screen printing process, and finished off with painterly details. The end result feels like something between a painting and a print, or a hybrid.”

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Aaron Johnson has held solo exhibitions at Almine Rech (Shanghai, Brussels), Over The Influence (Los Angeles), Gallery Poulsen (Copenhagen), and Joshua Liner Gallery (New York). My grandpa Mac made puzzles for decades starting some time in the 1980s, and my uncle Stephen picked it up sometime later, both of them together having hand-cut countless puzzles for family and friends over the years.

I've always loved poring over their puzzles and getting lost in the task of finding pattern and order in the chaos of pieces. The images they used were mostly torn from magazines, calendars and postcards, or any ephemera that looked like it would make a fun and challenging puzzle, and a copy of the final picture was never included with the puzzle for reference. When I decided I wanted to learn the craft, I knew I wanted to work with imagery made by contemporary artists around me, whose repeating motifs, detail, and particular compositional choices would be challenging to put together once cut into pieces, and exciting to study up-close, through a new lens.

Putting together a disassembled picture piece by piece allows us to understand its visual elements in new, unexpected ways, particularly without having the complete picture for reference to tell us how it should be oriented, or what it is we're even looking at. The surface of the painting likewise asserts itself when in its presence. Colors and color combinations can never be photographed the same way that our eyes see the color IRL, and I make use of this relativity. A painting, which historically has been a virtual experience (a window), can be decidedly phenomenological today, when almost anything can be experienced virtually. The paintings are not without illusion: the presence of collage is entirely fictive. Paint is built up against masked edges, juxtaposing with sprayed acrylic paint absorbed into the canvas. There is a sequence within the paintings from the back forward, and there’s also a shallow depth as a result of layering ropy lines of impasto paint over sprayed raw canvas. The effect feels like the various elements of the painting are moving across a surface." —Trudy Benson

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Trudy Benson (b. 1985; Richmond, VA) has held solo exhibitions at SUNNY NY (New York), Massif Central (Brussels), Miles McEnery Gallery (New York), Ceysson & Bénétière (Saint-Étienne), LOYAL (Stockholm), team(bungalow) (Venice, CA), Lyles & King (New York), Dio Horia (Mykonos), Ribordy Contemporary (Geneva), Galerie Bernard Ceysson (Paris), Galerie Bernard Ceysson (Luxembourg), Half Gallery (New York), and Lisa Cooley (New York).
