ABOUT THE WORK
Concision in the midst of superfluity. Riley Payne tackles issues concerning the malleability and impact of language and images in his labor-intensive drawings. Gravitating towards an obsessive attention to detail associated with art movements like California Finish Fetish, Japanese airbrush artists, pre-digital advertising illustration, as well as comics and graphic novels, Payne exacts precision to lay a fine glare on the absurdity of everyday occurrences and the current political and geopolitical climate. Phrases are pulled from his studio wall, a constantly updated pinboard of scrawled text gathered from speech, signage, music, and books. Background images are located from mass produced sources like stock photography and botanical journals. In our two new editions by Payne, text and made marks dance across a glimmering ocean and frame two doves, exploring the intimate nuance of symbolic noise.
RIley Payne has held exhibitions at Reading Room (Melbourne), New Release Gallery (New York), Fortnight Institute (New York), Tolarno Galleries (Melbourne), and was included in the NGV Triennial presented at The National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne). Payne is currently represented by Reading Room. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
