Her large-scale, hyper realistic figure paintings are made from erotic photographs and built layer by layer, using two airbrush nozzles to apply black and white acrylic. Text and language play a large role in Tompkins work, often driving the subject matter and concept of the piece. Her work is not meant to arouse fantasy but to transpose light and shade, the effect of the process enveloping the scene in sfumato. Tompkin's radicalism in the late 60s not only led to the unfortunate censoring of her work, but also the later recognition of her role in the American and European art scene. Like John Currin's famous series in 2006 or Paul McCarthy's sculptures, Tompkins' work has shocked the art milieu and been confiscated by customs, even in an age of omnipresent pornography. Sex Grid #8, though a small study on paper, expresses the same friction and tenderness as a larger work.

International customers are responsible for applicable duties and taxes.

1234... Known for his ability to hone personal longing into universal archetypes, Landers explores humour within sadness, tragedy circling ambition, and the interconnected absurdity of it all. Our new collaboration Dog, based on a painting of the same name recently exhibited at Anton Kern Gallery, melds Landers’ unique blend of text and figurative painting in the same surreal plane. Step one in this edition, each paper was hand painted first, using free-flowing strokes of highly liquid acrylic paint. The fluidity of the paint results in unpredictable spontaneous bleeds and blurs as the paint stains the paper. Next, an 11-color silkscreen process was applied to the painted papers, creating hard-edged graphic forms to contrast the atmospheric stains. Finally, the prints were hand finished by Johnson in his studio, giving some unique painterly touches, such as knuckles and hair texture. Each print in this edition is singular in the fluidity of the stained paper and the hand-embellished details.

“In my painting process I’m fascinated by the natural flow of paint, and the loose atmospheric blurs and bleeds that can result. I seek a dynamic contrast by applying hard edged stripes and minimal forms on top of the spontaneous washes. They start as color field abstractions, which then spark the potential for some figurative or narrative action to occur. My idea for this print was to capture those steps in a sequence that starts with the hand painted flow, followed by the sharp and precise screen printing process, and finished off with painterly details. The end result feels like something between a painting and a print, or a hybrid.”

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Aaron Johnson has held solo exhibitions at Almine Rech (Shanghai, Brussels), Over The Influence (Los Angeles), Gallery Poulsen (Copenhagen), and Joshua Liner Gallery (New York). Gabrielle Schwarz for Perrotin writes, “The title, Skunk Hour, is borrowed from a well-known poem by Robert Lowell, which begins as a light-hearted description of a seaside town in Maine and culminates in a self-portrait of a mind in turmoil. ‘I myself am hell,’ wrote Lowell, ‘nobody’s here — / only skunks, that search / in the moonlight for a bite to eat.’ Similarly, Maloof describes the scenes she constructs as ‘vessels’ giving tangible form to psychological states or particular thoughts and feelings.”

Apple Tree (2023) and Skunk Hour (2023) exhibit the figurative fascination Maloof brings to her contemporary still lifes — there is life, surely, replete with abundance, though memento mori intermixes its lingering scent. This uncanny realism is present throughout Maloof’s scenes that read as if plucked from dreams or the result of emotional warping. Perspective is an individual privilege, the subjectivity of which Maloof further prods in her densely patterned compositions that nearly approach psychedelia in their ability to shift and surprise.

Says Schwarz, “Life, as Maloof understands, is nearly always funny, even when things are pretty bad. In his cinematic paintings, butterflies, lightning bugs, flowers, and the moon are common protagonists, their delicate forms delineated by a mesmerizing, intrinsic glow.

Our new collaboration, I woke up. The Moon is full, so I send my wishes to the universe (2023), is based on Kim’s painting I Still Dream, exhibited during his 2022 solo exhibition at Hesse Flatow (New York) and part of his ongoing Nocturne Series, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The series, says Kim, “explores the dichotomy between light and dark through symbolic valences of hope; life triumphing over loss and despair.” The global pandemic stalled our collective hyperactive momentum into a dulled vibration, like the soft electrical buzz of a lone street lamp or the hiss of gunpowder nearing detonation. Kim noticed an opportunity in the then-empty streets and set out as an explorer, traversing New York aimlessly, “like a modern-day flâneur, taking inspiration from regular walks throughout the city, often stopping and taking notice of things that are fleeting and frequently overlooked.”

The ability to be still remains an underrated achievement amidst our regularly scheduled programming, cultural demands that reflect an insatiable appetite. When does forward motion become rote rather than generative? Kim’s work nudges us towards the afterglow — if we’re able to quiet our minds in the certainty of luminescence, perhaps it matters not who fanned the flame.

In this new series of monoprints, Kim charts the gradual gradients of a twilight sky, individually isolating each colorfield to evoke the passage of time. Each print illustrates a differently hued lunar portal, echoing the luminous purity of a singular silhouetted flower nestled in the grassy foreground. Featuring hand-torn deckled edges, I woke up. The Moon is full, so I send my wishes to the universe (2023), mirrors the intimacy of Kim's larger practice while existing in its own reverie, resulting in a wholly unique series that holds space for the poetic power of mindful observation.

Limited edition of 50 + 3APs + 4PPs, 2023
Archival pigment print on Hahnemuhle museum etching paper

Signed, numbered, titled, and dated by the artist en verso on archival label

24.00 x 30.00 in
60.96 x 76.20 cm

ABOUT THE WORK:

Realist painter Karel Funk creates portraits that merge extreme detail with anonymity. This hand-finished edition of 25 pieces, hand-painted with watercolor atop archival pigment ink on Hahnemuhle hemp paper, measures 30 x 24.5 inches and invites the viewer to reflect on the fragile nature of our physical being—a temporary vessel that, over time, succumbs to the inevitable cycles of breaking down and giving way to new existence.

Drawing inspiration from the cosmic event that birthed Earth's steadfast companion, the moon, The Follower is a visual homage to the lunar body's own turbulent origins from a celestial collision. Rooted in the geometry of circles, the painting explores the dynamic relationship between motion and stasis, a theme inspired by Paul Klee’s observation that “a line is a point that has been set in motion.” These loops—crafted with precision yet imbued with playful complexity—evoke pathways that are at times regular, at times intriguingly intricate, but never chaotic. They suggest figurative forms without becoming mazes, maintaining a sense of clarity and fluidity throughout.

Hofer’s practice transcends traditional boundaries, extending drawing into the realms of sculpture and installation. Born in South Tyrol in 1970, the artist is often described as a “drawing architect,” assembling his work like modular systems that seamlessly integrate monads, stones, or letters. His art disrupts conventions, questioning the structures and rules that shape our understanding of form and language. Through mirrored words, inverted text, and ambiguous statements, Hofer’s work subverts expectations, prompting viewers to reconsider meaning and context.

In Loop/New York, this sensibility is evident in the rhythmic interplay of forms, which suggests not only the interconnectedness of the composition but also a broader reflection on change, process, and the Honolulu-born, second-generation Japanese and Korean American visual artist whose work explores cultural hybridity, identity, and the meaning of "home." Influenced by the cultural nuances, iconography, and personal history shaped by his upbringing in Hawai‘i and his move to Los Angeles, Yamazaki addresses the universal diasporic struggles of in-betweenness, generational trauma, and erasure. By blending his personal narrative with the everyday aspects of life, he reimagines "home" as a vessel for collective identity. Home Grown emphasizes multicultural hybridity and intersectionality within Hawai‘i’s diverse society. Yamazaki draws intersections between Los Angeles and California, highlighting the distinct ways cultures coexist and evolve in relation to their histories. A transparent, veil-like chain-link fence appears in his work, serving as both a physical representation of history and a symbolic tool that connects figures and objects. The Toyota Tacoma, depicted as a prominent cultural symbol in Hawai‘i—especially within beach, surf, and labor communities—also reflects similar cultural intersections in California. Through his paintings, Yamazaki invites viewers to consider the fragments that shape their understanding of self and place, navigating the liminality that binds past, present, and psychological space.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Shingo Yamazaki (b. The figure-based drawings are rendered in layers of charcoal, their forms gradually obscured through distortion and compression. The title, a Jamaican patois expression meaning, “I can’t believe it,” conveys surprise or wonder and mirrors the drawing’s charged tension between recognition and obliteration.

From his drawings to his installation works and performances, Cosmo Whyte explores how migration unsettles identity. Frequently drawing upon his Caribbean roots, Whyte’s work engages the material and allegorical legacies of colonialism and the complexities of Black diasporic experience. Slippery in their legibility, Whyte evokes familiarity and dislocation, reflecting on the fluidity of identity and the instability of belonging. At the open end of the vessel, an arrangement of twig-like stems emerge from a lavender interior. Soft, lively shoots sprout from the main stems, a hit of bright pink at the shoots' ends exposing an inner glow inside each tendril. At the closed end of the vessel, a small collection of shapes – an arc and a sphere, or perhaps a piece of dried pasta and a rubber ball – rest on top of a small platform, as if just removed from a pocket and placed in this space to be admired or contemplated. The green vessel itself is patterned with fluorescent orange squiggles and rests atop a flat blue plate with a luminous red edge. The plate sits on a mustard surface in front of a lilac-pink background.

This print is part of CHIAOZZA's "Bouquet" series, which spans drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. This series explores the image of the vessel as a symbolic container for life and spirit. The luminous colors in the stems, the ball, the squiggles, and the plate further symbolize a liveliness that runs through all things, a representation of the unexpected moments that connect us.
