ABOUT THE WORK
Melissa Brown creates paintings that function as conduits for what is otherworldly about ordinary experience. She collages different painting methods that capture reality at different speeds: one through a camera, one through direct observation, one from memory. As part of her process, Ms. Brown uses methods of divination. For this series of prints, she has conducted 30 separate divinatory readings. Each reading was cataloged at a specific date and time and drawn by hand with graphite on each print.
The Diviner's Desk was released in December 2020 in conjunction with Melissa Brown's solo exhibition at Derek Eller Gallery (New York, NY). Brown's previous solo and two-person exhibitions were held at the Lamar Dodd Galleries, University of Georgia, The Journal (Brooklyn, NY), Roberto Paradise (San Juan), Magenta Plains (New York, NY), Essex Flowers (New York), and Canada (New York, NY) among others. Select group exhibitions include presentations at Deitch Projects (Los Angeles), Sargent's Daughters (New York, NY), Marvin Gardens (Brooklyn, NY), Gavin Brown's Enterprise (New York, NY), The Hole (New York, NY), Shrine (New York, NY), and Loyal Gallery (Stockholm). Brown lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
