ABOUT THE WORK
Melvin Way’s intimately-sized drawings, typically rendered in ballpoint ink underneath layers of scotch tape, display a liveliness, an ephemeral energy, a true sense of clarity captured amidst chaos. Featuring densely populated curves of scientific notations, mathematical equations, as well as other decipherable (and at times illegible) codings, Way’s work has a talismanic effect. Born in South Carolina, Way embodied a number of different lives in New York City — attending technical school, playing gigs as a bassist, all while managing the material conditions of schizophrenia, homelessness and drug addiction.
