Often employing language and humor, Brad Phillips sees his text work as a mode to satisfy his desire to be a writer through painting. Phillips constructed this drawing through a careful study of elaborate Gothic text; a stark contrast to the tongue-in-cheek statement referencing pop singer Mariah Carey. Untitled (Mariah) delivers an immediacy to the viewer, bypassing the pictorial to make "the title of the work, the actual work".
