Thornton Dial was born September 1928 in Emelle, Alabama. Dial’s work is currently included in a group show I Talk With The Spirits at Marianne Boesky (New York) and his work will be included in a forthcoming show at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2017. Dial has had solo exhibitions at Marianne Boesky (New York), Andrew Edlin Gallery (New York), Indianapolis Museum of Art (Indiana), New Orleans Museum of Art (Louisiana), and High Museum of Art (Georgia), among others. His work has been featured in group exhibitions shown at The Studio Museum in Harlem (New York), The Whitney Museum of Art (New York), and The Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.) and more. Numerous institutions hold Dial’s work in their collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Museum of Modern Art (New York) The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), and The Philadelphia Museum of Art (Pennsylvania). Thornton Dial is survived by his four children, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
