ABOUT THE WORK
You're not looking at us, we're looking at you is the first unspoken utterance offered by the women in Monica Kim Garza's painted universes. Favoring authentic vivacity over conceptual certainty, the wisdom offered by her matriarchy multiplies until it is replete within the frame. There is an unabashed celebration of life to be had and it includes moving bodies, eating tropical fruits and fresh fish, bountiful sunlight, and not apologizing for your existence. With each expressive stroke, Garza electrifies the athletic solidity of her figures.
Dance Party is our new launch of hand-touched works by Garza, using archival pigment prints at the base image for her embellishments, creating a series of twenty unique works with a combination of acrylic, glitter, oil pastels, and felt. In Dance Party we are treated to a saturated beach scene. Everything is moving. The figures and the sky are all smiling back at you. Happy to be here. There is a different level of intimacy to be shared when you're not overthinking it - when a shape is a shape, a color is a color, and a day in the sunlight is reason enough to be grateful.
