ABOUT THE WORK
The women in Danielle Orchard’s paintings know something we don’t. They occupy the spaces we wish we had — a few extra minutes to get ready, close gatherings of friends, evenings of romantic solitude — and command the appropriate sense of heartache associated with wanting to be somewhere you’re not. Drawing on motifs from art history, Orchard cleverly layers the literal and figurative intimacy of her scenes. In Day Studio, our new print edition, the deep stillness of the image is contrasted with its heightened sense of emotional turbulence, brought forth through Cubist-like abstraction, monochrome palette, and Orchard’s characteristic evocative details.
