ABOUT THE WORK
The illusion of a simple two-dimensional work gradually melts away as Rachel's characteristic masterclass in texture reveals itself. This work is a striking study, with undulating forms and the hint of scripts creating a new language that we are all invited to learn. The combination of collaged painting and found objects creates a completed work that can hold the attention for hours, as the familiar and the abstract meld together to form a new whole before our eyes.
Rachel Eulena Williams (b.1991, Miami, FL) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her work occupies the liminal spaces between painting and sculpture, and pushes the boundaries of both. The artist has developed her practice through a constant search for, and testing of, new materials. Dedicated to continual development, she recently undertook a fellowship at the Robert Blackburn printmaking studio in the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. Her work was celebrated in a two-person show with Scott Teleaven entitled Hey Mars in 2020, held at Cooper Cole in Toronto. More recently, she has crossed the Atlantic for a solo show, Silk Cotton Snow, at the Modern Institute in Glasgow, UK.
