Edward James - The Great Unknown is part of a series of paintings exploring what Sandro Kopp calls "the mediation of presence." Kopp's portraiture is often once-removed from the subject — he'll conduct a sitting via Skype or have a stuffed animal function in lieu of its owner. Deeply personal items imbued with memory and intimate significance, these adolescent objects are rendered with an earnestness and painterly formality that borders on the spiritual. This particular print is based on a painting of the only 'sitter' whose owner Sandro did not know personally. The bear in the portrait was given to him by children in Xilitla, Mexico, the village where Edward James, the great surrealist poet and artist, built his jungle paradise Las Pozas.
