ABOUT THE WORK
Francesca DiMattio’s Goblets are part of a larger body of work made in anticipation of company and celebration in a post-COVID world. The sculptural pinch-pots with thick stems were inspired by ornamental Roman goblets and jewelry, made to imitate the structural qualities of stone and metal. Their conspicuous gemstones and miscellaneous accessories were created from molds of her son’s toys, some of which vaguely reference the animals and symbols found in artifacts across ancient cultures. These embellishments include scarab beetles, storm troopers, and the familiar face of Sigourney Weaver in their over-the-top approach to match the occasion of coming together after more than a year of social distancing.
