ABOUT THE WORK
This edition is part of our inaugural Curator Series. Curated by Saša Bogojev and debuted at CAN Art Fair 2022.
In this large, hand-finished print what appears to be a tongue sticks out across a turquoise field. But why does this tongue have eyes? And since when do hairs grow from there? Arjen explains:
"I decided to go back to the basics of drawing and the possibilities of the line. How to be simple and expressive at the same time. Shuffling with different elements of the human body, I construct whole new entities.
I try to make balanced and minimalistic works. The deformation in Picasso’s work and ethnographic art are a great inspiration to me. I started looking for simplification and reduction. A simplification in a way like what Mondrian did in his abstract compositions. In this process I try to get an image that has volumes and feels like an organic and ‘real’ being. Also, the contradiction of a clear composition and a confusing content is something I like.
Working at the intersection of the simple and the absurd, I try to depict a bizarre entity that makes you wonder and smile. Sometimes there is the illusion of body parts that aren’t there, or the possibility that you can interpret one body part as two different ones.
Some works have an underlying message, commenting in a subtle way on the world we live in."
After working as a violin teacher for a number of years and making drawings in his free time, Arjen began painting in earnest during the pandemic. His work has since been shown with Août Gallery (Beirut), Droste Gallery (Paris), Richard Heller Gallery (Santa Monica), Eternity Gallery (Miami), Marian Cramer projects (Amsterdam) and MISA pop up art fair (Berlin). Arjen currently lives and works in the Netherlands.
