Textiles, found objects, and personal archive weave together in Melissa Joseph’s hauntingly delicate works. Working primarily in felt following a residency at Textile Arts Center, Joseph creates deep linkages to her global, multi-racial experience through the intuitive blend of image and material, the soft distortion of felt mimicking the slippage of memory. For our collaboration, Joseph selected images from her family archive: one from the Indian side — Love Marriage — and one from the Irish side — A Pair of Sisters.

“This one is called Love Marriage. It is a wedding photo of my Uncle Francis and Aunt Litty. I remember hearing my parents discussing their marriage as a love marriage when I was a child, and wondering what other kind there could be. I have grown to learn there are many different kinds, but in this context it was a specific arranged marriage where the couple chose each other and the families agreed.  I am moved by the tenderness of this image and the love embedded in it. I chose to embellish this edition by needle felting all of the flowers in white, which would have been white jasmine, and I can imagine the smell of them even through the photo.” — Melissa Joseph

Joseph’s practice is intimately tied to family histories, as well as how POC and femme bodies are permitted to occupy space. 20% of proceeds from Love Marriage will be donated to Aid Access, an organization that helps women who do not have resources or the means to access local abortion services.
