ABOUT THE WORK
The carefully constructed layers of Mallory's work cleverly draw the eye and take the viewer on a journey. The naturalistic forms allude to the duality of the nightshade plant, both medicinal and poisonous. Her use of color transports us to the blue hours that pass in the very early morning, that eerie detachment of the quiet hours gives us pause for reflection. The monochromatic exploration of deep blues is reminiscent of the German Expressionist fascination with blue as the color of spirit and soul. Our searching gaze is ultimately turned back upon ourselves and the realization of the journey this work has taken us on.
Mallory Page's (b.1983, New Orleans, LA) work centers on enormous canvases of monochromatic works that are built up of many meticulous layers applied slowly over many days and weeks. Past solo exhibitions have been held at Wally Workman Gallery (Austin), Martine Chaisson Gallery (New Orleans), and Longview Museum of Fine Arts (Longview, TX). Select group exhibitions include presentations at SOCO Gallery (Charlotte, NC),Dimmitt Contemporary Art (Houston), and Contemporary Arts Center (New Orleans) among others. Page currently lives and works in New Orleans, LA.
