Too much world! Refusal, violence, decoration, decay all contained in a face in a frame or hiding behind it. Or served on a tray or edged with tasseled fringe. Katelyn Ledford creates abstract feminist portraits that are preoccupied with the “destruction of domesticity.” Her unrestrained paintings are shot through with historical and personal reference, and embrace our present with wicked glee.
In Subtle As A Brick Through a Window, Ledford’s hand-finished print series created in collaboration with Exhibition A, there is nowhere to hide. We’re being sent a message etched into a brick—or are we sending it? Has this happened before? All that’s certain is painter’s tape is a poor way to piece together broken glass.
