ABOUT THE WORK
Joani Tremblay uses constructed images of landscapes excerpted from social media, advertisements, architecture sites and field research to paint simulated scenes and surreal and abstract landscapes that interrogate our perception of place. The artist assembles found images using digital collage techniques then paints the composition onto canvas. Referencing the digital representation of landscape in our times, Tremblay inverts and flatten perspectives. Fragments of built environments such as thresholds and architecture are used as framing devices to crop, obscure, and layer the landscape, unbuilding and rebuilding. Forms repeat and translate, referencing the speed at which we access content in our digital time.
Joani Tremblay (b. Montreal, Canada) earned an MFA from Concordia University in 2017. Their work has been exhibited at venues across North America and internationally, including Harper’s, New York and East Hampton (2022, 2021, 2020); The Pit LA, Los Angeles (2022 and 2021); Marie-Laure Fleisch Gallery, Brussels (2020); Interstate, Brooklyn (2019); Zalucky Contemporary, Toronto (2019 and 2018); Pony Sugar, Stockholm (2017); Projet Pangée, Montreal (2020); and 3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo (2014). Tremblay has participated in residencies in Los Angeles, Berlin, and Tokyo, and is currently in residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program, Brooklyn. They received many international awards, with most recently the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and the Canada Council for the Arts. Their work appeared notably in Art Observed, ArtFCity, Daily Lazy, Canadian Art, Border Crossings, Esse arts + Opinions, ArtViewer, ArtMaze Magazine and Maake Magazine. Their work has been acquired by numerous public collections, including the Montreal Municipal Art Collection, Montreal; RBC Corporate Collection, Toronto; Tricon Capital Group, Toronto; and the Mint Museum, Charlotte, North Carolina.
