Susumu Kamijo is infusing figurative drawing with his unique whimsy via a pleasantly unexpected recurring character: the poodle.
Rendered from oil pastel and colored pencil, Kamijo illustrates the canine in myriad forms that evoke its iconic regality. He deconstructs the animal form, as well as the landscapes in which they frolic to abstracted shapes, lines, and colors that successfully focus attention on the individual attitude of the subject; the sun becomes a glowing orb, while the poodle radiates its personality in staccato neons. In Hunting in the desert, a scarlet-maned poodle stares out from the frame, simultaneously daring audiences to fix their gaze on its celestial dappled teal and highlighted hot pink coat while coyly slanting its manicured hind leg.
Framing option is white or black painted wood, 7/8” wide flat face and 7/8” deep, with UV acrylic glass.
