Levinthal’s paintings are known for their ability to harness a deeply personal sense of melancholy through the nuanced facial expressions of her subjects, depicted in tightly cropped interior settings. The compositions are presented in such a way as to blur the line between foreground and background, often eschewing a sense of perspective altogether. Like many of her paintings, the main character in Marigold Couch simultaneously invites the viewer into her emotional landscape and remains unreachable beyond the pictorial surface.
