About the Work
American artist Marc Dennis creates striking hyperrealistic compositions of aesthetic abundance, using beauty as a tool of seduction while exploring its subversive potential.
Our new collaboration Caravaggio, based on the artist’s painting of the same name, is a layered glimpse into Dennis’ larger practice, wherein verisimilitude is called into constant question. A limited edition of 30, Caravaggio is a C-Print on archival glossy, resin coated paper, evoking both the wetness of freshly laid oils and emphasizing the illusion of surface destruction à la Lucio Fontana.
“My painting Caravaggio channels the Dutch Masters and summons the dark caves of our ancestors, while giving a contemporary voice to the eternal opposites; beauty and violence, myth and reality, love and loss, life and death — ultimately noting they are one and the same.
I’m fascinated with flowers for many reasons. Particularly, I’ve always felt intrigued by how many globally diverse cultures associate them with special occasions — births, baptisms, bar mitzvahs, inductions, graduations, performances, weddings, wakes and funerals. When words are inadequate, flowers are the most widely understood way to communicate sensations of love, admiration, sympathy, compassion and regret. The world clearly needs more flowers.” — Marc Dennis
