About the Work
We are excited to present Loom, a stunning print by Molly Greene, based on her original painting of the same name. This edition, limited to 35 prints, measures 26 x 16.38 inches and is beautifully rendered on Hahnemuhle etching paper. Loom was created as part of Molly Greene's exhibition "Very Much Alive" at Cadet Capela in Paris. The painting explores themes of connection and the enigmatic nature of relationships with other life forms, including plants, animals, and technologies. Greene delves into the simultaneous familiarity and mystery these entities present, examining how intimacy and unknowability shape our interactions. Inspired by an enormous century agave that flourished near her porch, Greene captures the essence of a transient ecosystem. During the creation of this body of work, the agave rapidly grew a towering stalk, branching out and blooming with bright yellow flowers that attracted a myriad of creatures. This extraordinary event became a focal point for Greene, symbolizing the dynamic life and eventual death of the plant.
In Loom, Greene reflects on the idea that attempts to depict life forms through painting are ever-changing pursuits, where the original form and the artist both transform during the process. The work stands as a testament to the struggle and beauty of attempting to understand and coexist with the unknown. Each print in this edition is signed and numbered by Greene, offering collectors a piece that embodies her exploration of life, change, and the limits of understanding.
Artist Biography
Molly Greene (b. 1986, Cornwall, VT) is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work critically examines notions of gender, species and the body. Inspired by her extensive academic background, Greene’s paintings of organic forms, rendered in pastel hues, evoke botanical studies and scientific diagrams. By disrupting traditional associations of her subjects, she allows them their own agency, exploring the porous boundaries between supposed binaries. Greene holds a PhD, MA, and MPhil in American Studies from Yale University, with concentrations in posthumanism, animal studies, and gender and sexuality studies. Her dissertation, titled "Deluge: On the Female Animal," underscores her deep engagement with these themes. Greene’s work has been exhibited widely, with notable solo exhibitions including "Pseudopodia" at Huxley-Parlour in London, "Very Much Alive" at Cadet Capela in Paris, and "Operator" at Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles. Her group exhibitions include shows at Honor Fraser Gallery and Nicodim Gallery in Los Angeles, White Columns in New York, and Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York. Molly Greene currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
