About the Work
We are excited to present two new editions by Richard Phillips, titled Margot (2024) and Cillian (2024). These limited edition archival pigment prints on Hahnemuhle Museum Etching paper are each available in an edition of 150.
Richard Phillips revisits the theme of celebrity within the context of modern visual culture, a subject he first explored over a decade ago in his 'Most Wanted' exhibition. These works, commissioned for 'The Art of Cinema' book by The Wrap in conjunction with the Oscars ceremony, delve into the public personas of 2024’s prominent actors, Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy. Through these portraits, Phillips eschews the typical portrayals found in mass media, opting instead for a classical drawing approach that seeks to unveil the deeper psychological and physical essence of each actor, beyond their familiar cinematic roles. This shift from commercial idolatry to a more introspective examination offers a unique view into the complex interplay of celebrity, art, and perception.
Artist Biography
Richard Phillips, born in 1962 in Marblehead, Massachusetts, is a renowned painter whose work critically examines themes of sexuality, politics, power, and death as portrayed in mainstream media. By applying classical painterly techniques to popular images, Phillips estranges these familiar visuals, charging them with new meanings. His unique style reinterprets photographic images of politicians with vivid neon hues and transforms supermodels into academic paintings, enhancing their status as pop icons. Throughout his career, Phillips has consistently subverted the glossy idealism of advertising, revealing a resistance to its overt seductions. Phillips' academic journey in art began with a B.F.A from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, in 1984, followed by an M.F.A from Yale University School of Art, Connecticut, in 1986. His career includes significant solo museum exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Kunsthalle Zürich, Switzerland; Kunstverein Hamburg, Germany; Le Consortium, Dijon; and Dallas Contemporary, Texas. His works are part of major public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Additionally, Phillips ventured into filmmaking, with notable premieres like Lindsay Lohan and Sasha Grey at the 54th Biennale di Venezia, and First Point at Art Unlimited at Art Basel. Richard Phillips lives and works in New York City, where he continues to influence and critique contemporary culture through his art.
