Marked by a distinctive use of simple shapes, swaths of vivid colors, and spatial manipulation, the paintings of Holly Coulis (b. 1968, Toronto, Canada) manage to update traditional genres of painting by imbuing them with a more contemporary perspective. Coulis has had solo exhibitions at galleries such as Sardine Gallery (Brooklyn), Susanne Hillberry Gallery (Detroit), Claudia Groeflin Gallery (Zurich), Lamontagne Gallery (Boston), and Groeflin Maag Galerie (Basel). In 2002, she was part of two-person show with Dana Schutz at Zach Feuer. Other group exhibitions include those at Storefront Gallery (Bushwick), Sargent’s Daughters (New York), Bravin Lee Projects (New York), Gallery Diet (Miami), as well as The Last Brucennial. Coulis currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
