Ellen Lesperance's complex, textile-inspired paintings present deconstructed garments as illustrative vehicles for honoring the women whose bodies have been dedicated to activism. Lesperance embarks on extensive research into threads of activist networks; both metaphorically by examining the methods and circumstances which catalyzed the movements, as well as literally by studying the garments worn by the women. Inspired by creative making as a tool of opposition, Lesperance immortalizes, enshrines, and celebrates those dedicated to the struggle in its myriad forms.
Land of the Feminye refers to a mythical world comprised of only women. Through meticulously rendered patterns sourced from an ancient Greek black-figure pottery depiction of Amazon costuming, Lesperance uses the entirety of the composition to design full-body armor for Feminye's inhabitants through her characteristic layering of garments. The result is a phantom image, simultaneously dense and transparent, that engages with the past and the future via poetic presence.
