About the Work

A symbolized drawing of Jacob Cornelisz Van Oostsanen’s Salome and the Head of John the Baptist from 1524 is centered near the top of the piece and welcomes the viewer in with its offering on a platter. Jan van Eyck’s The Arnolfini Portrait from 1434 is positioned as the mouthpiece. Magritte’s pipes create a mustache just above and to either side. Off the left pipe, Rodin’s The Thinker sits atop a carpenter’s level, but with a dunce funnel upon his head. Above that, a Sol LeWitt tower appears on the right-hand page of a book while Bauhaus faces mirror each other in the center of a target in the top right. Crowning the picture plane at the very top, McGinness has rendered the logo for the city of Den Bosch, the birthplace of Hieronymus Bosch in The Netherlands. Art history is symbolized, flattened, and equalized in McGinness’ fifth collaboration with Exhibition A, titled, Escape Yourself. The scene is materialized in porcelain-baked enamel, a material McGinness has worked in since 2001. Often used in subways and public signs, porcelain baked enamel on steel is the most durable signage material in the world, making it ideal for any environment and weather condition.

The work requires no framing, and hangs flush to the wall on a provided cleat.
