Parra (b.1976), a former graphic designer, follows in a long tradition of commercial artists like Andy Warhol and KAWS who later found their footing in contemporary art. Sharing Takashi Murakami’s super flat appreciation of image-making, Parra’s anthropomorphized characters wreak havoc on the romantic with bold primary blocking and a sly sense of humor. Parra has mounted solo exhibitions at HVW8 Gallery (Los Angeles), Jonathan Levine Gallery (New York), Ruttkowski;68 (Cologne), and Gallerie Patricia Armocida (Milan). In 2012, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art commissioned him to create a 60-foot indoor mural, entitled “Weirded Out.” He has been awarded the Amsterdam Prijs voor de Kunst (Amsterdam Art Prize 2010) as well as Best Illustration at the Dutch Design Awards (2010). Parra now lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
