After taking a step back from graffiti in 1999, Steve Powers (aka ESPO) came to prominence as an artist with multiple shows at Deitch Projects as well as a 2004 collaboration with Creative Time at Coney Island entitled “The Dreamland Artist Club”. Powers has exhibited at the Liverpool and Venice Biennials, The Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), and MOCA’s “Art in the Streets” in 2011. Select solo shows include those at V1 Gallery (Copenhagen), Alice Gallery (Brussels), and White Flag Projects (St. Louis). Power’s paintings were featured in the touring exhibition and accompanying documentary, “Beautiful Losers.” Books of his work, “The Art of Getting Over” and “A Love Letter to the City,” were published in 1999 and 2014, respectively, while his illustrations have graced the pages of The New Yorker. Powers is currently based in New York.
