About the Work
Exhibition A is excited to launch our first collaboration with our latest On-The-Rise artist, Ella Rose Flood, featuring two uniquely intimate editions titled 'Emergency joint' and 'Ghost orchid'. Throughout the process of these editions’ creation, Flood sought to emphasize the physicality of the materials at her disposal. In doing so, Flood aimed to make these modestly-sized objects take on a larger, more commanding presence while also allowing the prints to resonate as something more complex than just paper mediums. To achieve this, Flood hand-tore the edges of each print, giving them an organic, almost sculptural quality. This act not only highlights the objecthood of the medium but also echoes her devotion to the meticulous finishing of her paintings. The back of each print is completed with Flood’s own drawings and writings, adding another layer of intimacy, connection, and insight into the psychology of her practice in general. Flood has noted that these works and their unique finishes are meant to function as physical representations of symbols, as kinds of worship objects that reflect the ways in which Flood’s own personal living and working spaces have been carefully and lovingly adorned with objects, writings, and emblems of significance. Ella Rose Flood's work is deeply rooted in personal experience, exploring themes of mourning and memorialization, while engaging deeply with the historical traditions of still life painting. Flood often takes the physical and conceptual space of the studio as the emotional site of experience and interpretation. While these paintings sometimes act as cathartic records of significant moments and symbols, Flood’s work is also largely concerned with the clinical act of imprinting memory on one’s psyche through image making. 'Emergency joint' and 'Ghost orchid' are small but powerful traces of the visual and linguistic code that is spread across Flood’s entire practice, and are further highlighted through the inherent repetition of the print process and Flood’s distinct, personalized interventions.
