About the Work
Devra Fox’s practice is grounded in meticulous graphite drawing that brings human and natural forms into intimate dialogue. Her work often features hybrid figures that merge anatomy with botanical elements, exploring embodiment, emotion, and transformation. Through careful observation and labor intensive mark making, Fox reflects on how interior states such as memory, connection, and vulnerability take shape in forms that feel both familiar and quietly uncanny.
Two in One is a series of graphite drawings that considers connection and becoming through the entwining of human and plant imagery. Inspired by Fox’s experience of pregnancy and early motherhood, the works reflect on matrescence as a state of doubling, a moment when one becomes two. The series meditates on interdependence and growth, suggesting that no body or organism exists in isolation but is always shaped by cycles of attachment, separation, and renewal.
Artist Biography
Devra Fox (b. 1989)
Devra Fox’s graphite drawings and works on paper explore containment, memory, and the physical manifestation of emotion. With a meticulous and meditative approach, she animates the interplay between internal states and external environments, considering how unpredictability, attachment, and sentiment become inscribed onto objects and forms. Her monochromatic palette transforms natural and bodily imagery into intimate, uncanny representations that question how we experience vulnerability and resilience.
Fox received her BA in Studio Art from Bard College in 2012 and her MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University in 2016. Recent solo exhibitions include In Orbit at Hashimoto Contemporary, San Francisco (2024), WISH, BONE at Nicodim Upstairs, Los Angeles (2023), and Limbs at Hesse Flatow, New York (2023).
