Yves Tessier’s unique style is akin to contemporary genre painting, with its focus on a variety of quotidian scenes. However, an ordinary scene when juxtaposed with an idiosyncratic setting, is transformed into multicultural vision of an optimistic and progressive society. Tessier draws from numerous lineages of art history, inducing aforementioned genre painting, the posture-oriented graphic traditions of ancient art, and Japanese wood prints, resulting in a flattering of space and time. In Martha Schwendener's New York Times review of Tessier's 2017 solo show at Shrine, she wrote, "The internet is... crucial [to Tessier’s practice]. History and the present, politics and poetry, the sublime and the ridiculous can now be digitally compressed into clever memes. Mr. Tessier’s images channel some of that strangeness and possibility.”
Framing option is black or white painted wood, 7/8” wide flat face and 7/8” deep, with UV acrylic glass.
