About the Work

Created using pure pigments dispersed with water, acrylics, and oils, Elizabeth Glaessner renders imagined scenes that exist in fluid limbo; actions are just as readily interpreted as joyful as they are violent while her figures defiantly withstand characterization of either gender. In Circling, Glaessner's composition recalls art historical references of The Three Graces but thwarts traditional interpretation with the addition of an eerie fourth figure. The darkly dreamlike quality of the piece is enhanced by a saturated landscape that melts into the foreground, figures circling endlessly in a clouded embrace.

Artist Biography

Elizabeth Glaessner, an artist known for her dream-like paintings, creates a surreal universe where fluid figures and amorphous landscapes undergo constant metamorphoses. Her works, inspired by symbolist painters such as Edvard Munch, delve deep into a psychological world through a distinctive use of color and technique. Glaessner’s paintings act as portals to a realm of untapped emotions, exploring the primordial unconscious free from societal and moral boundaries. She layers oil over poured pigments in an intuitive process that allows the subconscious to interrupt and expand the narrative. Glaessner holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art (2013) and a BA in Art & Art History from Trinity University (2007). Her solo exhibitions have been hosted at venues including Francois Ghebaly in Los Angeles, Perrotin in Paris, P·P·O·W in New York, and Consortium Museum in Dijon. She has also been featured in prominent group shows at spaces like Brigitte Mulholland in Paris, Journal Gallery in Patmos, DCMoore Gallery in New York, Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago, and Green Family Art Foundation in Dallas.
