Singleton’s raw, energetic paintings utilize a gestural application of color to explore the lived experiences of Black Americans in public and private settings. He is equally inspired by circus performers on the trapeze and romantic partners enjoying a quiet evening in the nude - often emphasizing his subjects’ skin tones against purposefully chosen backgrounds to emphasize the tone of each narrative. In particular, Love Letter To The Dogon ll displays Singleton’s thoughts on ancient traditions and sciences of the tribe, isolating certain elements of the silkscreened images in four colorways to draw attention to the language and garments of indigenous peoples native to the central plateau region of Mali in West Africa.

Marcus Leslie Singleton is a Brooklyn-based painter focused on processing our collective experience of reality through image-making. His diverse education spans the subjects of anthropology, textile design, classical music composition, immigration, economics, and fine art, the latter most notably through a painting internship under William Villalongo at Yale University. Recent exhibitions include a 2021 group show at University Museum (Albany, NY), 2020 solo exhibitions at Steve Turner Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) and Turn Gallery (New York, NY), as well as inclusion in the Quarantine Series Exhibition at Journal Gallery (New York, NY).

All of our frames are made from sustainably sourced engineered hardwood that is manufactured in the USA. Frames are available in Black or White, and Walnut. Prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Cellulose matboard, using acid-free polyethylene cloth tape. Each mat’s surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conversation quality foam-core board. This piece will be floated with a 1.5" border on the matboard with spacers to separate the artwork from the glazing. Our White and Black frames have a ⅞” wide flat face and are 15/16” deep. Our Walnut frame has a ¾” wide flat face and is 1 ⅛” deep.
