About the Work
In a unique collaboration between the acclaimed artist Guy Richards Smit and Exhibition A, we're proud to unveil The Gag Cartoon Project. This endeavor delves into the dynamics of the art world, capturing its nuances and reflections through the medium of gag cartoons. Comprising four distinct editions, each limited to an edition size of five, these pieces are not only artworks; they're dialogue. Every print showcases a hand-painted caption by Guy, rendered on finely textured Hahnemuhle hemp paper. Inspired by Guy's long-standing passion for gag cartoons and their capacity to critique, this collaboration aims to release pieces that provoke thought while providing an authentic reflection on the art domain.
Born in New York City in 1970, Guy Richards Smit is an artist of diverse talents, encompassing painting, video art, performance, and music. His work been exhibited at prestigious venues like the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Hirshhorn Museum (Washington, DC), and the Pompidou Center (Paris, France). Beyond the realm of visual arts, Guy's musical prowess has been showcased internationally as the lead singer and songwriter of the alt-rock band, Maxi Geil! & PlayColt. His venture into the world of television with the 5-episode sitcom The Grossmalerman Show, directed by the esteemed Joshua White, stands as a testament to his versatile talents. Roberta Smith of The New York Times has lauded Guy's work as “a tour de force.” Throughout his career, he has delved deep into themes of narcissism, desire, power, and failure. His genuine engagement with the art world is evident in his two-year effort to contribute original gag-cartoons to The New Yorker. Fans of Guy's work can look forward to an anthology of his cartoons, featuring contributions to Hyperallergic, Artnet, and The New Yorker, set to be published by Hunter’s Point Press in Spring 2024.
