About the Work
In his hyperrealistic paintings, Brad Phillips delivers humorous yet haunting vignettes that navigate complex and often melancholic human conditions like addiction and loneliness. By presenting these themes with a combination of wordplay and comedy, Phillips creates an access point to otherwise uncomfortable truths. In his new print edition, First Time Sober in Europe, a bouquet of flowers bloom outward with tendrils outstretched; their fecundity is contrasted with an unlit cigarette nestled between a lily’s petals and the sepia toned background, reminiscent of tea-stains or the watermarks made from tear drops falling onto the page. Within the image border, Phillips’ characteristic handwritten scrawl reads “My First Time Sober in Europe” which is the key to his magic: by providing the feeling of raw autobiographical honesty, his work remains guarded from his personal truths, transforming himself and his audiences into voyeurs.
Brad Phillips (b. 1974, Toronto, Canada) has held solo exhibitions at de boer gallery (Los Angeles), James Fuentes Gallery (New York), Groeflin Maag Galerie (Zurich), Division Gallery (Toronto) and Rod Bianco Gallery (Oslo) among others, as well as a two-person exhibition with Cristine Brache at Anat Egbi Gallery (Los Angeles). Select group exhibitions include presentations at Harper's (New York), Nino Mier Gallery (Los Angeles) curated by Olivier Zahm, Mast Books (New York) curated by Justin Adian, Galerie Sebastien Bertrand (Geneva) curated by Richard Kern, The Hole (New York) and many others.

Framed artwork is custom framed once it is ordered. Allow 3-5 weeks for framing and delivery.
All of our frames are made from sustainably sourced engineered hardwood that is manufactured in the USA. Frames are available in Black or White Matte and Walnut.
Prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Cellulose matboard, using acid-free polyethylene cloth tape. Each mat’s surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conversation quality foam-core board. Some of our work (typically those pieces with a deckled edge) is floated on the matboard with spacers to separate the artwork from the glazing.
We use museum quality .060 mm plexiglass to frame your work. It blocks 82-85% of UV rays to prevent color fading from exposure to light, protecting your art for years to come.
Our White and Black frames have a ⅞” wide flat face and are 15/16” deep. Mats are 1” wide for prints up to 8” x 10”. Mats are 2” wide for prints larger than 8” x 10”.
Our Natural and Walnut frames have a ¾” wide flat face and are 1 ⅛” deep. Mats are 1” wide for prints up to 8” x 10”. Mats are 2” wide for prints larger than 8” x 10”.
