About the Work
Emilie Stark-Menneg’s latest print edition, Flutter Song, is inspired by her recent solo exhibition, Thread of Her Scent, held at the Farnsworth Museum of Art in Rockland, ME. Drawing from the powerful symbolism of two medieval unicorn tapestry series—The Hunt of the Unicorn at The Met Cloisters, NYC, and The Lady and the Unicorn at the Musée de Cluny in Paris—Flutter Song reimagines the roles of the maiden and the unicorn. These figures, often constrained by traditional narratives, now break free across centuries and borders, splashing through vibrant landscapes and eluding their hunters in a thrilling race toward freedom and discovery.
Stark-Menneg captures the layered, tactile quality of the original tapestries by hand-embellishing each print with fiber flocking, glitter, and textured paint, enriching the work’s physical presence and inviting viewers to explore its textures. Each piece in the edition also features a unique phase of the moon, from crescent to full, evoking the natural cycles that influence both mythical and earthly realms.
Through Flutter Song, Stark-Menneg channels her dedication to feminist iconography and mystical landscapes. Her work references pioneering artists like Ana Mendieta and Carolee Schneemann, blending archetypal themes with deeply personal explorations of identity, myth, and freedom. In a world increasingly dominated by digital realities, Stark-Menneg’s art creates a bridge between the past and present, reminding us of the human spirit’s resilient search for wonder in a transformed world.
