About the Work
We are honored to present "It's getting serious," a limited edition series by the artist Gao Hang, in what marks our inaugural print collaboration. This edition was created using a multi-stage process that began with a foundational archival pigment print, upon which Gao Hang masterfully applied a layer of fluorescent green using airbrush with high-flow acrylics. This vibrant base was then overlaid with a silkscreen layer of ink, adding a tactile depth and richness to the piece. Gao Hang's artistic practice is deeply rooted in the examination of digital graphics as the 21st century's "found objects," focusing on the interplay between modern technological brilliance and the inherent rawness, oddity, or awkwardness of these digital entities. His work is inspired by the transformative journey of digital imagery, particularly the transition from the graphical marvels of late 20th-century 3D modeling and graphic rendering in computer games to their current state, often characterized by a certain crudeness and ridicule. This edition, featuring a basketball player in a neon green jersey, embodies Gao's interest in the unexpected and sometimes humorous outcomes of digital evolution, mirroring the raw and unfiltered essence of human emotion and creativity. Drawing parallels between his artistic process and the dynamics of standup comedy, Gao views his art as a complex dialogue that, much like comedy, navigates through brutal honesty, absurdity, and humor to engage with its audience. This approach not only reflects Gao's personal habits and obsessions, particularly his affinity for standup comedy that pushes the boundaries of political correctness and societal beliefs, but also underscores the essence of his creative exploration—balancing between critique and celebration of digital culture's impact on contemporary art.
