About the Work
“I’ve always loved the photograph of Kermit sitting by a window and smoking a cigarette, in front of him is a cup of black coffee and an ashtray full of butts. He struck me as world weary, the way I felt for long periods in my life, especially when I was younger.” So began the body of work that Markus was to exhibit at Los Angeles-based Kantor Gallery in January 2021. Developing these variations on a singular idea or character, she is able to mine connections to the pop culture of her childhood years and combine them with today’s most poignant topics of patriotism and unshakable melancholy. Kermit with Auras is one example of this series of conversations with one particularly green icon of the 70’s. Rendered in the artist’s signature washed-out style where colors bleed into one another, the effect produces an aqueous interaction of pigment within the hard edges of this famous frog’s unmistakable silhouette. Markus invites the viewer to have their own conversations with this version of Kermit, daring us to make our own associations within the larger discussion of past and present.
Liz Markus (b. 1967, Buffalo, NY) has held solo exhibitions at Stems (Brussels), The Pit (Los Angeles), Unit London (London), Maruani Mercier Gallery (Brussels), White Columns (New York), and Loyal Gallery (Stockholm) among others. Selected group exhibitions include showings at Tripoli Gallery (East Hampton), Harper’s Books (East Hampton), Eric Firestone Gallery (East Hampton), and Canada (New York). Museum exhibitions include presentations at The Reece Museum (Tennessee) and Nerman Museum (Kansas City). Markus lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

Framed artwork is custom framed once it is ordered. Allow 3-5 weeks for framing and delivery.
All of our frames are made from sustainably sourced engineered hardwood that is manufactured in the USA. Frames are available in Black or White Matte and Walnut.
Prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Cellulose matboard, using acid-free polyethylene cloth tape. Each mat’s surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conversation quality foam-core board. Some of our work (typically those pieces with a deckled edge) is floated on the matboard with spacers to separate the artwork from the glazing.
We use museum quality .060 mm plexiglass to frame your work. It blocks 82-85% of UV rays to prevent color fading from exposure to light, protecting your art for years to come.
Our White and Black frames have a ⅞” wide flat face and are 15/16” deep. Mats are 1” wide for prints up to 8” x 10”. Mats are 2” wide for prints larger than 8” x 10”.
Our Natural and Walnut frames have a ¾” wide flat face and are 1 ⅛” deep. Mats are 1” wide for prints up to 8” x 10”. Mats are 2” wide for prints larger than 8” x 10”.
Any artwork that is floated will be placed in a frame that has a ⅝” wide flat face and is 1 5/16” deep. Work will be floated with a 1” border around it.
