In his 2011 exhibition "Trash Landing," Nate Lowman presented paintings based off of pop-culture refuse and Willem de Kooning's canvases of Marilyn Monroe - the latter of which Lowman created about twenty iterations. "I like the psychosis of it," he told W Magazine, "I imagine it's why serial killers get a weird joy out of killing the same way every time. I just do it until I'm done with it." In a benefit auction for The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Lowman's This Marilyn fetched an astonishing $240,000, quadruple the high estimate. A cropped version of the painting is featured in this print.
