ABOUT THE ARTIST'S PRACTICE
"When in the room with my paintings, you will smell the paint first. The surface of the painting likewise asserts itself when in its presence. Colors and color combinations can never be photographed the same way that our eyes see the color IRL, and I make use of this relativity. A painting, which historically has been a virtual experience (a window), can be decidedly phenomenological today, when almost anything can be experienced virtually.
The paintings are not without illusion: the presence of collage is entirely fictive. Paint is built up against masked edges, juxtaposing with sprayed acrylic paint absorbed into the canvas. There is a sequence within the paintings from the back forward, and there’s also a shallow depth as a result of layering ropy lines of impasto paint over sprayed raw canvas. The effect feels like the various elements of the painting are moving across a surface." — Trudy Benson
