About the Work

Selected Reading (Nausea) is part of Eric Yahnker's ongoing series of drawings which combine famous figures - both real and fictional - with hand-selected works of literature. In this print, Yahnker places Jean-Paul Sartre's existential masterwork Nausea in the hands of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, creating an image of lost innocence in which we can literally see the pursuit of meaning rendered meaningless. According to Yahnker, "enlightenment and entertainment marinate in the same murky meatloaf."

Artist Biography

Eric Yahnker (b.1976, Torrance, CA) studied journalism at the University of Southern California before transferring to CalArts’ famed Character Animation Program. Upon graduating, he worked on projects including South Park, MADtv, and Seinfeld, as well as a host of hand-drawn animated commercials. From 2007 onward, he shifted focus to his personal work, which has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. Describing his work as “long-form, visual, comedic poetry,” and “glorified political cartooning,” Yahnker continues to use his unique background to create installations anchored by wall-sized, photorealistic drawings utilizing charcoal, graphite and colored pencils. Leaning heavily on pop-culture imagery combined with cinematic, political and historic references in order to magnify broader social truths, he was recently described by The New York Times’ Ken Johnson as “an exceptionally imaginative satirist [who] is also an ambitious, prolific and technically impressive draftsman.” Yahnker has exhibited at Paradise Row (London), CES Gallery (Los Angeles), Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, (Grand Rapids, MI), Galerie Division (Montreal, QC), Marlborough Broome Street (New York), The Hole (New York), and ACME (Los Angeles). He is currently represented by Ambach & Rice in Los Angeles.

Framed artwork is custom framed once it is ordered. Allow 3-5 weeks for framing and delivery.

All of our frames are made from sustainably sourced engineered hardwood that is manufactured in the USA. Frames are available in Black or White Matte and Walnut.

Prints are hinged to a conservation quality, acid-free and lignin-free Cellulose matboard, using acid-free polyethylene cloth tape. Each mat’s surface paper is fade and bleed resistant and is attached to a conversation quality foam-core board. Some of our work (typically those pieces with a deckled edge) is floated on the matboard with spacers to separate the artwork from the glazing.

We use museum quality .060 mm plexiglass to frame your work. It blocks 82-85% of UV rays to prevent color fading from exposure to light, protecting your art for years to come.

Our White and Black frames have a ⅞” wide flat face and are 15/16” deep. Mats are 1” wide for prints up to 8” x 10”. Mats are 2” wide for prints larger than 8” x 10”.

Our Natural and Walnut frames have a ¾” wide flat face and are 1 ⅛” deep. Mats are 1” wide for prints up to 8” x 10”. Mats are 2” wide for prints larger than 8” x 10”.

Any artwork that is floated will be placed in a frame that has a ⅝” wide flat face and is 1 5/16” deep. Work will be floated with a 1” border around it.
