ABOUT THE WORK
Sleepover
draws its arresting power from the nostalgia of childhood experience. Heymans recalls spending many nights with friends in a hunting shack heated by a wood stove, connecting with the surrounding landscape so intimately as to become one with the rolling hills and patchwork forest. In a larger sense, Heymans’ paintings expand on this refusal to depict the environment as a mere setting for human activity. Instead, her compositions are crafted from the aerial perspective in order to eliminate the hierarchy of foreground and background, as well as provide the opportunity for creative liberties outside the confines of realism. What human aspects she does include are often painted into the underlayers of the finished view, suggesting our assimilation into the landscape as part of a larger system rather than two competing forces at odds with one another.
