David Leggett's solo exhibition, Their funeral, our dance floor, is on view at Shane Campbell Gallery through May 6th. Employing his unique visual vocabulary assembled from pop culture references, folk art, political slogans, self-portraits, comic books, and more, Leggett confronts audiences with the dark realities of American racial and political dynamics. His vast command of references allows him to successfully subvert images through humor, satire, and internet-meme language, resulting in a fragmented tragicomedy that is inextricable from our contemporary political reality. In his own words, “Political art can often be heavy handed and preaching to the choir. But with the humour, it's almost like breaking bad news to someone, telling a joke can lessen the blow.” Spectator features a selection of Leggett's recurring characters -- disembodied heads, sports references, and googly eyes -- into a powerful composition whose deeper meaning is emphasized by its ambiguity.
Framing option is black painted wood, 7/8” wide flat face and 7/8” deep, with UV acrylic glass.
