About the Work
Marilyn Minter (b. 1948, Shreveport, LA) is an American artist renowned for her nuanced representations of women and her unwavering advocacy for women’s rights. Living and working in New York City, Minter’s practice spans photography, painting, and video, where she masterfully explores the intersection of beauty, desire, and the female body.
Throughout her career, Minter has been an outspoken advocate for reproductive freedoms, consistently challenging the historical objectification of women. Her work often highlights natural, corporeal qualities—such as body hair and stretch marks—that are typically excluded from mainstream depictions of women. By focusing on these authentic details, Minter reclaims the female form, presenting it as not only natural but profoundly beautiful.
Minter’s technical mastery is evident in her process, where she bridges the worlds of photography and painting. Beginning with photographic images, she uses them as the foundation for her larger compositions, meticulously replicating them in paint while making subtle adjustments that enhance the sensory experience. Her work is known for its incredible attention to detail, achieved through the layering of thousands of colors and the careful manipulation of focus.
This upcoming edition, Sweetheart, exemplifies Minter’s deep commitment to both her artistic practice and her advocacy. By dedicating 33% of the net proceeds to support Planned Parenthood, Minter not only champions the causes she holds dear but also reinforces her role as a leading voice in the fight for women’s rights. As Minter herself powerfully states:
"My generation fought tooth and nail for Roe. If you think for a second that we're going back, then f@!k you."
This bold declaration speaks to the artist’s unwavering resolve in the ongoing fight for reproductive freedoms, making Sweetheart both a testament to her artistic vision and a call to action in support of women’s rights.
