ABOUT THE WORK
Ariana Papademetropoulous creates portals which usher in the liminal space connecting perception and illusion. Her paintings transport the viewer through dimensional echoes; there is the surface image and there is the magic embedded within. Working primarily in oil on canvas, her work glows with an uncanny luminescence, emphasizing the surreal nature of her scenes. Rupturing reality like the vertigo of the past overlaid on pastel present, Papademetropoulos paints with seamless softness, creating a perspectival filter that is as beautiful as it is eviscerating. Our three new print editions by Papademetropoulos, Guilty Pleasure, The Mother of Pearl, and The Best Whistler in the World, illustrate the balanced tension between materiality and fantasy in her work.
Ariana Papademetropoulos (b. 1990, Pasadena, CA) has held solo exhibitions such as Unweave a Rainbow at Vito Schnabel Gallery (New York), Just Like Arcadia at The Breeder (Athens), Sunken Gardens at Soft Opening (London), and The Man Who Saved a Dog from an Imaginary Fire at Wilding Cran (Los Angeles). Selected group exhibitions include All of them Witches at Deitch Projects (Los Angeles), and Anima Mundi at Manifesta (Marseille). She recently curated The Emerald Tablet at Jefferey Deitch (Los Angeles), which included work by Mike Kelley, Agnes Pelton, Raúl de Nieves, Theodora Allen, and many others. In 2017 she curated Revenge of the Crystal at SADE (Los Angeles) and in 2014 she organized Veils, an exhibition at The Underground Museum (Los Angeles). She currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
