Armed with a fervent appreciation and near-encyclopedic knowledge of art, artist Brad Phillips has been virtually curating a stream of consciousness style group show under the Instagram account @brad_phillips_group_show for years. The account has garnered an engaged following, in part, because Brad has no agenda other than sharing great art. In the second edition of our ongoing Curator Series, we approached Brad to bring his virtual group show to life through an online exhibition featuring series of works on paper by 9 artists who have recently caught his eye.
ABOUT THE WORK
Untitled (silver drawing) was created using a Silverpoint drawing technique. Silverpoint is a technique that originated in the Middle Ages (artists including Leonardo da Vinci were known to use the technique), which consists of marks made on specifically primed paper using a thin silver wire attached to a stylus. In this work, the artist incorporated the use of a family heirloom - a silver teaspoon - to make silverpoint marks, for larger passes of tone. In accordance with the traditional Silverpoint technique, saliva was used as a medium of blending the silver marks.
Ella Rose Flood (b. 1999) received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021. She has forthcoming solo exhibitions in 2023 with Labor (New York), In Lieu (Los Angeles), and Hans Gallery (Chicago).
