About the Work
Julio Anaya Cabanding works on discarded and deteriorated mediums, collected from abandoned places and rehabilitated in his studio in order to give them a new identity in a different context. Or he paints these iconic and famous paintings on walls in the city, hiding them in inhospitable places or exposing them in the most unexpected environments, resulting in impressive contrasts and the decontextualization of those rigid structures established within the art world.
In Vincent Van Gogh. "Wheat fields with cypresses" (Van Gogh’s classic work on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in the collection of National Gallery, London—Van Gogh himself reproduced more than once!) the impasto has been twice reduced: first in Cabanding’s interpretation on corrugated cardboard, and flattened again through printing to create a brain-teasing and irreverent trompe l’oeil.
When “framed” the laser-cut edge of this hand-finished print casts a shadow and complicates the puzzle further. Please inquire for details about our recommended framing.
This edition is part of our inaugural Curator Series. Curated by Saša Bogojev and debuted at CAN Art Fair 2022.
