Landscapes, states, and countries have historically been personified as women. Here however, although she exists on a grand scale, the figure is not necessarily a shimmering clear-eyed Helvetia. She instead appears to be a pensive, ambiguous young woman personifying nothing more specific than a banal bath. The painting also reminds one of Poussin's portrait of Midas bathing himself in the river to remove the curse of his golden touch. We Alter and Repair refers to a larger body of work that includes paintings of women in domestic situations with a psychedelic twist. Kolsrud is best known for her portraits of anonymous women, painted from photographs from the 1960s and 1970s.
Framing options are black or white painted wood, 3/4" wide flat face and 1" deep, with UV acrylic glass.
