About the Work
Adam Parker Smith’s latest edition, Zeus, reimagines classical antiquity in a contemporary form, presenting a nine-inch cube of Carrara marble that captures the essence of The Artemision Zeus. This ancient Greek sculpture, believed to depict the thunder-god and king of gods, serves as the inspiration for Smith’s innovative exploration of the intersection between tradition and modernity.
Smith’s work is distinguished by his ability to blend classical aesthetics with cutting-edge technology. The creation of Zeus begins with advanced digital modeling, where Smith and his team meticulously recreate the intricate details of The Artemision Zeus. The digital model is then radically transformed, compressing the grandeur of the original sculpture into a compact cube that offers a new, intimate perspective on this iconic figure.
To bring these nine-inch cubes to life, Smith employs a combination of state-of-the-art technology and traditional craftsmanship. A seven-axis reductive robot performs the initial rough cuts, ensuring that the basic form is rendered with exceptional precision. Master artisans then take over, using hand-carving techniques to refine the details and infuse each piece with the nuanced qualities of the original sculpture.
Through this process, Smith captures the majesty of The Artemision Zeus in a more personal and approachable format. By concentrating the sculpture’s form into a cube, Smith invites viewers to engage with the work in a new way, challenging traditional notions of art appreciation and making classical art more accessible. Zeus represents a dialogue between the grandeur of classical antiquity and the possibilities of contemporary artistry. Each cube serves as both a tribute to the original sculpture’s magnificence and a reimagining of its historical importance.
With this edition, Smith continues to push the boundaries of how we interact with art, ensuring that the timeless beauty of the past is preserved and reinterpreted for today’s audience. Zeus stands as a testament to Smith’s vision of making art both profound and intimately engaging.
